Creating a Good Agreement: Essentials of Successful Consultation

Successful consultation, that is, change that has the desired impact, interventions that make a difference over time, and problem solving that sticks, all start with a thoughtful entry process, thorough contracting, the establishment of clear boundaries for the work, the exploration of common values. In other words, the end is in the beginning. Most often, little attention is paid to the start up of a change project. If the work is staffed internally, the client may already know the consultant, and think that “entry conversation” is unnecessary. If the group or organization is using an external consultant, laying out the issues and concerns seems to be enough.

Objectives

This workshop focuses on the developing the skills to engage the client in a thoughtful and intentional process that results in laying a solid foundation for a real partnership in any change effort.

Participants will:

Learn about the benefits and risks, the delights and dilemmas of the entry and contracting process.
Increase self-awareness.
Explore the impact of your shadow, biases, patterns, and interests on the entry process.
Learn to identify healthy and unhealthy boundaries and their significance.
Learn to identify resistance in your self and in the client.
Assess your own entry and contracting skills.

This experiential learning process includes take home tools to use in entering and contracting with clients in the future.
